Just One Road

15th March - Nottingham
(Waterstones)

Game themes: World War 2 Strategic / Historical Military

Gameplay: Communication / Intelligence-gathering / Combat / Mission-driven / Wide Area Play (over multiple gaming locations simultaneously)

Jim Wallman and friends ran a mega-wargame based on Operation Market Garden, which took place in September 1944.

The game took place over three different locations around the UK and one online, all on the same day.

The entire project involved over 100 participants, divided among the locations, playing both Axis and Allied forces.

The physical locations were Central London (run by Stone Paper Scissors), Nottingham (run by East Midlands Megagames) and Bristol (run by Southwest Megagames).

The form of the game was a huge operational map game, with player teams commanding divisions and corps. No previous experience of this sort of game was necessary, and neither was a deep knowledge of the historical events the game was based on.

Unlike in history, the town of Arnhem was taken and held by the paratroopers, with armoured support arriving just in the nick of time - but Allied supply lines were stretched and menaced by German counter-attacks. Would it all have been over by Christmas? Maybe!

Player testimony from this run of Just One Road:

“Trying to coordinate and deliver supplies for multiple teams whilst not having enough evoked classic megagame struggles… Almost airstriking our allies and calling it off at the last second was a fun moment.”

“Thought the fog of war element worked REALLY well.”

“I'm not a historian, but I think the game presented just about every player with difficult decisions/choices that were realistic.”

“It felt true to life.”
